April 10: A Little Boy On His Way Home

by allisonkujiraoka

I turned the corner at the bike shop

–forgot to go to Grandma’s–

remembered at the pharmacy

and headed down the alley.

Got to talking with my friends

and missed her block again

only realized where I was

when crossing at the towers.

By then I’d almost reached our house

and so continued on

thinking you probably weren’t here

and guess what?  No one home.

My bags so heavy and me so tired

I couldn’t turn around

and go back toward Grandma’s house–

then you got here, just now.
