April 22: Motherheart

by allisonkujiraoka

A mother, mourning her girl’s independence

because it means distance.

Weighing what’s best for her child

against her own heart’s cry.

Bending to give and let go

without splitting completely in two.

I see it in you.

I’ve seen it before,

that look.

My mother has never stopped pleading for me to stay,

and I know it will be me someday.
