April 23: Overthinking It

by allisonkujiraoka

I don’t know what that song’s about

but that’s okay

I’ll put it on repeat anyway.

Sometimes words aren’t logical

they’re visceral instead

They go straight to the heart

deftly bypassing the head.

So there’s no need to submit it

to rigorous evaluation

The lyricist has penned it

in her own unique translation.

Of course

One could parse all of the verses

and speculate on its metaphors

go spelunking for its secrets

and throw open unmarked doors.

But naked intentions are

the least artful kind

and uncloaked mysteries

tend to dull the mind.

The poet’s voice now rendered

a monotone articulation

You’ve made the song into

a robotic ululation.
